Mercury retrograde is the most famous three weeks in astrology, and the most misquoted. Astronomically nothing reverses: Mercury overtakes Earth on its faster inner orbit, and from our moving viewpoint it appears to back up through the zodiac. Astrologically, the planet of communication, transit, and commerce shifts from output mode to review mode.
The traditional reading is precise, not superstitious: matters ruled by Mercury, which means messages, contracts, devices, travel logistics, and thinking itself, become prone to revision. Plans made now tend to get rewritten when the planet turns direct. That makes the period genuinely poor for finalizing and genuinely excellent for everything beginning with re: reviewing, revising, reconnecting, repairing, renegotiating.
What it feels like
Emails answer themselves out of order, old contacts resurface, travel reshuffles, and conversations need a second pass to land. People with strong natal Mercury placements often feel it as mental fog or, alternatively, as a welcome quieting of the usual chatter.
The shadow periods matter: the week before the station, Mercury covers the degrees it is about to re-cross, and themes preview themselves. The week after turning direct, it re-crosses them a third time and the season's loose ends finally knot.
